Fashion and Women in Power

Updated: Nov 22, 2021

I have been so inspired to write about this since watching the inauguration last week and the swearing in of our first women Vice President, Kamala Harris. My eye always go straight to the outfits and were they ever on point. Those monochromatic colors, exquisite detail and the power and confidence these women exuded was breathtaking. It brought so much hope for the future on so many levels for women in our country, our children and the direction of fashion.

****Before I go any further, let me just say this post is not about politics or party views, its simply about the fashion of some beautiful women in power. Politics and fashion seemingly go hand in hand.

My love for colorful, ageless fashion was certainly sparked last week. Although trends in the world of powerful women have changed over the years, classic looks remain consistent. From bustled skirts and lace fichu's to patterns, pants suits, and perfectly tailored coats their looks are enduring and elegant as ever. When putting an outfit together, I always begin or end with timeless piece(s), you can never, ever go wrong. Maybe this is why I've always been drawn to these styles. I believe we all have our own style, and the way we portray ourselves makes all the difference. Over the years, these women have been such a prime example of this. It's easy to identify the ones who have an eye and love for fashion, and let me tell you most of them do. In a recent Vogue article Amanda Gorman, who wore that stunning yellow coat states "Fashion has so much meaning to me, and it's my way to lean into the history that came before me and all the people supporting me." Ivanka Trump (another example) dresses exceptionally well, however critics will argue it’s money that buys her style. I beg to disagree that one has to do with the other. Yes, it certainly makes a difference on which designers you chose, but not style. The way you put together an outfit (or direct your stylist..because we need direction, too) is about having a true passion for it. Then you have Ruth Bador Ginsburg (RBG), she created a movement with her dissent collar. Because of who she was and what she stood for her look became famous, but furthermore she had an eye. I honestly don't think I'll ever look at a pair of round dome earrings or shades of blue (primarily turquoise) the same. They appeared to be one of her statement pieces/colors, and she wore them exceptionally well! Color is another WOW factor for these women, seen this year more than ever. For example, I always associate Jackie O and Hillary Clinton with pastel pinks and blues because they both wore these colors at their husband's inauguration ceremonies. Following last week, all I can think of is the color purple when I envision Michelle Obama's style. Not only did bright colors stand out because these women wore them well, but they held deep meaning. Purple, a mix of the political party colors, red and blue is said to evoke a sense of solidarity, bipartisanship, and unity, according to the Hill. Each and every color worn at the address, symbolized something from confidence and stability (Jill Biden's marine blue dress) to women's suffragists (J.Lo in white Chanel). Harper's Bazaar states, "the choice to wear one single color from head-to-toe is not only flattering in its ability to elongate one's silhouette, but simple in its straightforwardness."

Thank you to these women for sporting such gorgeous threads last week and throughout the years. Hope you enjoyed this read and it added a little color and light to your day! Check out pics below of some of my favorite looks worn by iconic women in power.

Nichole
