Lets talk about self-care!
After getting though 2020, I think we ALL deserve to put this on our priority list. I know so many Moms, whether they work or stay at home tend to put themselves on the back burner (myself included). Over the past couple of years, I have worked hard at taking time out for self-care and continue to do so. This truly helps me stay on my game (happy Mommy, happy home). The most important realization I had to come to is that no one is going to tell me to make time for myself or necessarily condone it. It’s a decision I had to make between me, myself and I, and when I made that decision I vowed to stay loyal to all of us. ;)
Making time for yourself takes confidence, grace and patience. You have to understand that it will sometimes mean sacrificing other things, whether is be a load of laundry, cleaning up toys, prepping dinner ahead of time, responding to friends, or time with your kids or spouse. However, the reward is imeasarable. Having to wake up a half an hour earlier to empty the dishwasher, wash the bed sheets or catch up on texts/emails, or prepping dinner in a pinch is much easier when I feel good about myself. I am a believer in quality over quantity when it comes to most things I love. My family always gets the best of me when I take care of myself. Similar to choosing clothing, quality wins 9/10 times. I don’t recommend just buying 10 shirts in diff colors bc they are on sale, instead invest in a versatile top or 2 that makes you feel amazing. Piece(s) that makes you happy every time you wear them, not just ones you feel obligated to buy. Each piece should be unique and special, like the time you can give your loved ones after you’ve had a chance to re-charge.
Below are some tips and products I’ve discovered along my path to self care that really work.
Take Baths: Bath salts and bath pillow are a must!
Exercise: Do what works for you, it can be anything. For me its spinning, yoga (I heart my Peloton and classes at anatomie), strength training at Her Strength, paddle sports and skiing.
Stretch: Because better flexibility leads to better mood, less pain and more efficient workouts. Create your own or chose a few that appeal to you from here. My routine always includes a variation of the latter based on my needs.
Quiet Time: Reading or doing something (even for 5 min) that’s not related to social media, daily obligations, or the news that delivers a positive message is a great way to calm your mind. Some of my favorite books/publications I tend to pick up: The Universe Has Your Back, by Gabby Bernstein, The Little Dictionary of Fashion, by Christian Dior, The Parents Tao Te Ching, by William Martin, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell, HERLIFE Magazine and Vogue.
Help Others: This is sort of a catch 22, but whether it's volunteering at your kid's school, calling a friend (I stress call because most of us text these days and a phone call now goes a long way,) running an errand for someone who can't get there, baking for a neighbor or donating clothing; helping others can be a great way to practice self-care. When I'm in a rut, I often put my stuff aside and help others. At the end of the day, my problems don't seem so big, and my heart is in a better place.
Listen to Music: Most of us are able to access our playlists from anywhere at this point, throw yours on or ask Alexa to play whatever genre you're in the mood for and go about your business. Music quiets my busy "Mom brain" and helps me focus on tasks at hand. I listen to whatever I'm feeling at that moment, opting for anything from Beyonce to Grateful Dead. Singing along can also be helpful.
Eat Healthy: I cannot stress this one enough, and the impact it has on everything you do. Eating healthy for me consists primarily of a whole food (50% plant based) organic diet, excluding gluten and dairy. When I eat this way, I feel my best, sleep better and have more energy. I also try to keep salt and sugar intake down. There are so many diets out there, but don't get caught up in the fads--do what works for YOU. If you eat something that seems or looks like it's bad for you then it probably is. Always read labels (the less ingredients, the better) and listen to your body.
Essential Oils: It took me a while to buy into these as I am super sensitive to smells, but I finally uncovered a few scents I enjoy that help me relax. Also, with kids around they are much safer than candles. My latest obsession is the Portable Pilot Diffuser from doTerra I love how small and easy to use this is. Since I'm on the go often I can use it anywhere and it travels well. Much easier to clean than the larger ones and you're not committed to one area of your house.
Go Outside: Fresh air is the easiest mood booster out there and essential to our well being. If you feel like you're drowning in the "to do" list, or just need a minute to yourself, step outside, or take a quick walk. You will always come back refreshed.
Look Good, Feel Good: This has always been my motto. It doesn’t matter what you wear or whether you put on makeup or not, but making sure you leave the house feeling like your best self makes a huge difference in confidence and attitude. *This is different for everyone and there is no right answer.* My "everyday" look is more of a casual style (i.e.: jeans, bodysuit, oversized sweater, sneakers or boots: winter/ high waisted shorts/linen pants + tee or sundress +slides: summer), a little a makeup, and at least two accessories or fun details I love. Don't get my wrong I LOVE my sporty threads, but athletic wear doesn't always secure that 'feel good' look for me unless headed to/from a workout.
Establish a Skincare Regimen: I currently have a morning and nighttime routine that works well for my skin. I love the PCA skin line and have seen a major difference in my skin since I began using it. This regimen combined with quarterly facials is essential, especially as you age. PCA skin line can also be purchased locally at Coccolo Spa.
Stay Hydrated: Last, but definitely not least. I drink water all. day. long. and at this point in my life its what I'm craving for hydration about 90% of the time. Exceptions include wine, coffee, and tea. The rest is pure water. I have found the best way to stay hydrated is by carrying a water bottle (I love S'well) around wherever I go. It works like a charm and I swear it helps me drink half my weight in ounces (recommended) most days.
Whether self-care has been part of your regimen for years, or just beginning, remember when trying something new give it time (and consistency) for it to work. Be patient with yourself, I know I already mentioned this but patience is so, so major. Try not to let guilt set in if you let your routine slide, just go right back to it and do the best you can. Please feel free to leave comments or DM me with any questions about my routine. Happy 2021 and take good care.
Xo,
Nichole
